    Our initial room was awful! It was clean-ish but strongly smelled of damp and was very tired. The toilet was cracked as well as the bathtub. The fridge did not work properly as all drinks were warm inside despite it being very loud whilst ‘working’. The ceiling fan was working but extremely loudly and my daughter found it very difficult to sleep with. We decided to upgrade our room after 1 night and it cost us a lot of money as we were staying for 2 weeks. The staff however were brilliant. Everyone was very enthusiastic and most eager to help.

    The hotel constantly ran out of most spirits - day and night. Drinks were watered down. We were told to remove our cutlery from our starter plates to be used again for the main course (even in the speciality restaurants). I expect the table to be set with two forks and two knives, as do most people. The bars which were advertised as open until 1am started to close by 11 after about our third night there (we picked this hotel partly because it had late bars. Having said that, seeing as we could not get more than one drink of choice most evenings, there was little point staying up late! No welcome drink or towel on arrival, the guy checking us in seemed annoyed that we didn't want to upgrade, we were not given a lift to the room or even told where it was, just told 'go down there to the right' by the bell boy (the check in guy gave us no indication where our building was). No bath plug for the bathtub. The pool has tiles and edges missing in places and the pool filtering system didn't appear to be working a lot of the time (stuff floating on top). Lighting was so poor in some restaurants that many customers were using the torches on their phones to read the menus (even young people). A few times we were not asked if we wanted a drink in the restaurants and a few times the drinks we asked for did not appear. French restaurant and Blue Bayou bar (still advertised on both Tui's and Jewel's websites) were closed for the duration of our holiday and were absent from the daily lists of available restaurants. The advertised 'drink of the day' was often unavailable or not known by the bar staff (or perhaps they knew they did not have the spirits etc. with which to make them). During the full two weeks we did not see anyone who looked like a manager of any kind, therefore in the absence of a Tui rep there was nobody to complain to. With the number of things to complain about I imagine any managers were keeping a low profile - if indeed there were actually any there. In all of the property the only place/bar that had any tables and seats suitable for playing cards etc. was the coffee bar - so only about 8 tables in a huge hotel. We have travelled to many hotels in the Caribbean and Europe, mostly with Tui, and this is the first time we have felt the need to complain. This was not a cheap holiday and we have had better facilities and service at a three star. Jewel Punta Cana has two things in its favour: the beautiful, well-kept gardens and (most of) the staff.
