Dear Guest Relations, I recently received an email inviting me to review my stay at your hotel. After some thought, I decided it would be more helpful to write to you directly, as there were a number of issues during our holiday that significantly affected our experience. The biggest issue throughout our stay was the sun loungers around the pool. Your hotel rules clearly state that reserving loungers is not permitted, yet every day the vast majority were reserved, often for several hours without anyone using them. This meant that finding somewhere to sit, particularly in the shade, became a daily source of stress. I raised this with Reception and was told that staff regularly ask guests not to reserve loungers, but that nothing changes. What made this even more frustrating was that, while I was standing at Reception, a guest who had just arrived asked what time he could reserve a sun lounger and what time the pool opened. Rather than explaining that reserving loungers was against the rules, he was simply told “9 o’clock.” In contrast, when my daughter politely asked if she could use her inflatable in the pool, she was immediately told it was forbidden. She was left in tears that evening because she had asked so nicely, yet adults appeared to be allowed to ignore the rules with no consequences. It felt very unfair and inconsistent. Unfortunately, this issue overshadowed much of our holiday because every visit to the pool involved searching for available loungers while many sat empty but reserved. On several occasions we had to wait for guests to return from lunch or even from trips out before we could sit down. We also experienced several maintenance issues with our room. The air conditioning did not work properly for the first two days due to what appeared to be a faulty door sensor. We repeatedly had to open and close the balcony door several times before the system would sometimes begin working. In addition, we had ongoing problems with our room key. Every time we left the room it was difficult to lock thw door and then regain access, and on the sixth day we had to return to Reception five separate times before being told the battery in the lock needed replacing. On one occasion our room had not been cleaned when we returned after a day out. As there were no available loungers by the pool, we were unable to relax there while waiting, despite many loungers appearing empty but reserved. We ended up sitting in the corridor for around 20 minutes while Housekeeping cleaned our room. When I made the booking, I specifically requested a quiet room. At check-in I was told we had been upgraded to a larger room because it was our first stay. However, the room appeared to be the same type I had originally booked, and it certainly was not quiet. One night we were kept awake by a baby crying in the adjoining room, and on several evenings the entertainment was so loud that we had to wear headphones in our room just to be able to relax. I chose not to keep returning to Reception to complain because there was a noticeable language barrier, and I didn’t want to spend my holiday repeatedly raising issues. I was already trying to reassure an upset daughter, and I didn’t want our holiday to revolve around making complaints. Finally, we had been looking forward to the advertised children’s activities. Unfortunately, these appeared to be aimed almost entirely at very young children, with very little available for older children, which was disappointing. This was my first holiday in ten years and my first proper holiday alone with my only daughter. It was something we had both looked forward to for a long time, so it is incredibly disappointing that so many avoidable issues affected our stay. I appreciate that no hotel can control everything, and I understand that some situations, such as a crying baby, are simply part of travelling. However, many of the issues we experienced—particularly the lack of enforcement of the sun lounger policy, the maintenance problems with our room, and the inconsistent application of hotel rules—were within the hotel’s control. I hope you will take this feedback seriously, as I believe these issues could be improved for future guests. I look forward to hearing your response. Yours sincerely, Michelle Taylor
