My stay at the Phonecia Hotel in Tunisia was excellent. The accommodation was of a very high standard, with clean and comfortable bedding throughout my visit. The housekeeping staff maintained the room impeccably, ensuring it was cleaned thoroughly each day. I could not fault any aspect of the service or accommodation and was extremely satisfied with my experience.

This marks my third visit to Tunisia, and likely my final one, as I had initially planned to return every five years. Unfortunately, this experience fell significantly short of my expectations. Traveling from Mexico to Thailand as a family with an autistic child has generally been met with care, support, and respect; however, this was not the case at the Phenicia Hotel. Upon our arrival at 11:30 AM, along with two other families, we were initially impressed by the warm welcome. However, the check-in process was frustratingly slow, as the receptionist prioritized the larger family and another family of three, leaving my son and me waiting for over thirty minutes without even a drink. When I approached the reception to inquire about our check-in and request some water, my initial positive impression quickly deteriorated. I also requested a ground-floor room due to my child's autism and the associated risks of a balcony, but I was misinformed that none were exsisting at this hotel. Later, I discovered that ground-floor rooms did exist, and the room we were given, which had a bathtub, posed significant challenges for showering my 1.9-meter-tall child. It was too late to request a room change after three days of our week-and-a-half stay. That evening, I became aware of the staff's inappropriate behavior towards my son during dinner. A senior staff member made an unacceptable comment in Arabic, referring to my child as \"MAHBOUL,\" a slang term for crazy or mad. This blatant discrimination against my child was intolerable, prompting me to leave the restaurant in anger and seek out hotel management. However, the receptionist informed me that no one in charge was available to address my concerns. During my stay, I initiated a complaint through TUI's live chat while seated at the reception, at which point the general manager approached me and my son. He expressed his apologies and assured us that an investigation would commence regarding our concerns. However, later that evening, I encountered a similar issue with the reception bar staff. The hotel appears to be prioritizing profit by selling day pool access to locals, resulting in overcrowding at the pool, beach, and restaurants. This situation escalated when a local threatened to kill my son after a minor incident, prompting me to intervene for his safety. Some tourists recognized my son’s special needs and came to our aid. When I reported this to the hotel manager, he failed to apologize or check on our well-being, which I consider a clear oversight on his part. A restaurant manager, who witnessed the initial discriminatory incident, offered us a complimentary dinner as an apology, attempting to downplay the situation by explaining that the offending remark was merely slang. However, the emotional impact had already been felt, and such behavior is unacceptable in a four-star establishment. The hotel manager later offered day access for my sisters to ease our discomfort, but I opted to pay for a one-night stay for them instead. These experiences left us feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable, highlighting that the hotel is not yet adequately equipped to cater to individuals with autism, despite the manager's intentions. It is my hope that my experience will serve as a catalyst for training staff on autism and the needs of special individuals. While the hotel boasts a beautiful beach and pleasant rooms, the bathrooms are in dire need of refurbishment, and the drink selection is notably poor despite the good food options available. I would advise families with special needs or disabilities to reconsider staying at this hotel and in this country, as we have received far better treatment elsewhere. Additionally, I noticed that Anna from guest relations did not reach out to us during our stay, yet she has been actively responding to negative reviews on TripAdvisor with her own perspective.
